Decarbonizing the Transportation Sector: Challenges and Policy Options

March 30, 2023 • 1:00pm
TOYOTA AUDITORIUM

Webcast Link

The transportation sector remains the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. Benjamin Leard, assistant professor at UTK, will present details on the economics of reducing emissions from passenger vehicles and summarize the features that make this task difficult.

Meeting climate change goals will require aggressive emissions reductions from the transportation sector, especially from cars and light trucks, which represent the largest source of transportation GHG tasks. Leard will include a discussion of policy options for overcoming the challenge of decarbonizing the transportation sector.

Leard holds a joint appointment with UTK’s Agricultural and Resource Economics Department and the Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy. He is an environmental economist with current research focused on climate change and transportation policy.
