Sue K. Hicks

Sue Kerr Hicks (1895-1980): A graduate of Hiwasee College and the University of Kentucky. Hicks was practicing law in Dayton when the Scopes case arose. Hicks served on the prosecution along with his brother Herbert, District Attorney General A. T. Stewart, local lawyers Wallace C. Haggard, James G. McKenzie, and his father Benjamin G. McKenzie, and former presidential candidate and anti-evolution campaigner William Jennings Bryan. After the trial Hicks went on to serve as a judge. He was also active with various civic organizations.

Judge Hicks’ papers are arranged in two distinct collections. The papers are arranged by subject including the Fort Loudon Association, Loudon County History and Elections Material, Court Transcripts, and the Scopes Trial. There is material that addresses election records, judge’s forms, and other items documenting the career of Judge Hicks. Hicks’ papers are stored in approximately 9 linear feet of boxes.
