The collection primarily contains information on the University of Tennessee. James D. Hoskins’ and William E. Cole’s manuscript for “In Service to the state: a history of the University of Tennessee, 1794-1934″ offers an historical synopsis covering 140 years of the university’s history. There is also a two-page typescript document titled “Know your university.” The document consists of historical information that might be understood as university trivia. The collection also contains demographic information on the state of Tennessee including population by county and division according to a 1948 census. Finally, there is a typescript document titled “Senate bill number 301″ from the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee.

James D. Hoskins was born in New Market, Tennessee in 1870. He was a professor of History and Economics at the University of Tennessee. He was a dean between 1910-1934 and the university’s president between 1934-1946. Hoskins died in 1960.
