This collection contains a variety of papers written by or about various political figures from 1813 to 1929 with the bulk of the material from 1868 through 1877 and 1892. While most of the political figures are from Tennessee, many others are from states including Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, and Virginia. The name of the collection is derived from the fact that the large majority of the documents are from politicians representing southern states, but it is important to also acknowledge within this collection the inclusion of states outside of the south. The bulk of political positions held are United States Congressmen, but other positions include judges, governors, state legislature, and some United States Senate members. The large majority of the collection encompasses various forms of correspondence, but biographies of Congressmen and printing records of speeches in the United States House of Representatives are also included.
