Clive W. Bare began his career in the United States Department of Justice in 1939. He became a judge in the United States bankruptcy Court in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1957. He retired in 1987 although he returned to the judiciary in three years later to ease the overcrowding of dockets in the Eastern District of Kentucky and the Southern District of Florida.
This collection houses memoranda, opinions, antique legal textbooks, correspondence, programs, photographs, awards, certificates of appreciation, and court papers documenting Bare’s career as a judge. Of particular note are the papers showing the Jake Butcher trial, which brought Bare into national prominence.
Clive Bare’s papers are housed in approximately 10 linear feet of boxes.
