Abstract: The Department of Political Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville conducted a survey of
students currently taking political science courses. The survey was designed to elicit students’
preferences in the upcoming Tennessee presidential primary, measure their political attentiveness and
participation, and record their attitudes toward government officials, public institutions and a range of
political issues.
The survey began on January 17 and concluded on January 23. Instructors in a representative sample of
courses distributed a questionnaire that was completed anonymously by students. 400 students, 84% of
whom were undergraduates, participated in the survey. 48% of the respondents are political science
majors; the remaining 52% are other majors or “undecided.” The sample is 56% male; 44% female. The
racial composition of the sample is 88% white, 7% African-American, and 5% “other.”
