Welcome Teachers!

Civic Education is an important mission of the Baker Center, and to that end the Baker Center is pleased to work with grade school teachers across the state.

Our High School Summer Intern program is open to rising 10th-12th graders in the Knoxville area. For intern selection and recruitment, we rely heavily on the recommendations of High School teachers.
The Baker Center is also available to administer the Project Citizen curriculum for interested teachers. This simulation is ideal for teachers looking for an easy way to integrate civic education into various course curricula (science, English, etc.). It is also ideal for student groups to work on as a training session to understand decision-making processes.
Our Lesson Plans also offer teachers several methods for presenting public policy issues to students in new and interesting ways.

Baker Scholars in the News!

Baker Scholars Jaye Phillips, Jordan Davis, and Elizabeth Williams have been selected by Tennessee Campus Compact to attend a project development workshop on the subject of service learning. The students will initiate a conceptual design for a program to promote service learning that will be implemented on the campuses of Tennessee’s higher education institutions, with the help of a grant (application made) from State Farm.. After the September 12th conference, the students will represent UTK within the Tennessee Campus Compact, and carry out the project from February 2010-February 2011. Baker Center Celebrates “Tent City” and Probes Voting Rights

The Howard Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of “Tent City”, one of the earliest right to vote campaigns in the rural South, with a ”Tent City” Celebration and Voting Rights Symposium on March 31-April 1, 2009. Baker Center Leadership Transition

College of Law Professor Carl Pierce will serve as interim director of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, beginning June 1. He replaces Alan Lowe, who left the Baker Center earlier this month to become director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

Carl has been at UT for 37 years and, in addition to his distinguished teaching career, has served in various administrative capacities.... more>
