In early 2003 the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy began operations at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The mission of the Baker Center is to develop programs and promote research to further the public's knowledge of our system of governance, and also to highlight the critical importance of public service.

Rita Geier Speaks in Washington, DC

Baker Center Senior Fellow Rita Geier gave a special presentation to the Congressional Black Caucus and the Minority Quality Forum at their joint conference “HEALTH EQUITY and JUSTICE NOW!” The program, held in Washington, D.C. on April 14-15, took a comprehensive look at health care in the United States, emphasizing health disparity and its causes and efforts to boost health equity in the U.S. Ms. Geier’s presentation, entitled “Call to Action: A Federal Assault on Health and Inequality,” highlighted socioeconomic disparity factors, examined the impact of federal policy today, and proposed a broader view of the causes and effects of disparity as “complex and multidimensional” subjects. Graduate Class Receives Project Citizen Training

The Baker Center continues to offer training in Project Citizen to teachers or non-profit organization leaders of students in grades 4-12. On June 3- 6, Nissa Dahlin-Brown taught a group of social studies student teachers in Dr. Dorothy Hendricks' graduate secondary social studies methods course.
