Flunking the Electoral College:
The Case for a National Popular Vote and a New Roadmap for Reform
Senator Baker has been a long time advocate of reforming the electoral college and as he has said in books that he has written as well as at our Voting Rights Symposium last spring, “we need to make the electoral system more representative and responsive by abolishing the electoral college. Direct election of the president by popular vote is preferred, but I would be willing to consider any improvement.” In line with Senator Baker’s view, the Baker Center will be hosting a lecture by Robert Richie on the arguments for and implementation of a national popular vote for president.
Robert Richie is the Executive Director of FairVote, an organization dedicated to various voting reforms, perhaps most notable of which is a national popular vote for president, and has been working for the institution of a popular vote for almost two decades. As part of his work, he has worked with members of congress to develop popular vote legislation, co-authored two books, Every Vote Equal (2006) and Whose Votes Count (2001), and spoken to scores of organizations.
