One major of emphasis at the Baker Center is the concept of “civic engagement.” There exists a natural connection between public policy, civic engagement, citizen involvement, and community problem solving. Beginning with the surrounding Knoxville community and hopefully moving out into the state, the nation, and the world, the Baker Center is actively attempting to pull together community, academic, non-profit, student, education, and business leaders to formulate relationships with the purpose of solving complex real-world issues.

University Assisted Community Schools @ UT: Presentation at the University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Bob Kronick (Educational psychology and counseling) and Gavin Luter (Baker Center) have been invited to present a paper at the University of Pennsylvania about the university assisted community schools model used in 5 elementary schools. The paper will present a model that shows how an institution can take steps toward a university assisted community school model from the full service school model. April 22 Event Showcases Civic Engagement @ UT, Calls Faculty to Get Involved
On April 22 in the Toyota Auditorium, over 115 members of the community and the University of Tennessee gathered to explore existing models of civic engagement already underway at the University of Tennessee. Faculty from almost every college gathered to share the various ways in which they engage with the community.
