Baker Scholars

Staff Contact: Gavin Luter

Each year, the Baker Center seeks out UT's brightest and most engaged students to honor as Baker Scholars. These students, drawn from a range of academic disciplines, are active, highly motivated, and forward-looking members of the university community, and the Baker Center is pleased to support their lofty academic and professional pursuits. Now in it's fifth year, the title of Baker Scholar has grown to become one of the premier honors conferred upon students of public policy at the University of Tennessee.

Scholars must meet stringent academic requirements, and after being selected from a rigorous application process, join the existing class of Baker Scholars to support and enhance the ongoing efforts fo the Center. Baker Scholars are given the opportunity to meet one-on-one with featured speakers at all Baker Center events, and many Scholars actually work with the Center's directors to plan upcoming conferences. The Baker Scholars interact with local legislative and civic organizations including the East Tennessee Economic Council and are also treated to an annual dinner in their honor hosted by the University. Many scholars also choose to conduct their academic research, undergraduate and master's theses, and dissertations at the Center. Scholars are currently working with the Tennessee General Assembly an array of non-profit groups and UT faculty on projects related to civic education and public policy. In addition, the Baker Center supports the Scholars as they pursue exciting opportunities to study outside the United States and to work as interns in many of America's most prominent government agencies and political institutions.
