Tennessee Civic Education Commission

Staff Contact: Nissa Dahlin-Brown

Established by legislation spearheaded by Baker Scholar Brad Vaughan, this state commission was established in the summer of 2006 by Governor Phil Bredesen. Composed of government, private sector, education, and community leaders, the commission was established to examine the state of civic education in the state of Tennessee. The Baker Center has a guaranteed spot on this commission and is responsible for maintaining our connection with civic education in the state of Tennessee.

Recently, a study surveying all civic education initiatives in K-12 education was launched by the commission. The Baker Center managed data entry and compiled the report that is being turned over to the commission. From there, the commission will make recommendations to the state about civic education in our state schools.
