Baker Scholars Gear Up For Summer Experiences
Friday, June 5, 2009
As the summer is upon us, several Baker Scholars are across the country gaining experiences in internships, workshops, and other experiences that further their interest in a public service career path. Here is a sample of some of the work being done by Baker Scholars:
Anne Buckle is a summer intern at the Department of State intern in the Western Europe division. Anne will be assisting in the transition of Foreign Service officials with the new administration, including the training of the new Ambassador to France and serving as the interim Desk Director for the French division of the Department of State. While in Washington, Anne will participate in networking with the Harvard University Institute of Politics, given the Baker Center’s affiliation with Harvard’s National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement. She will get an opportunity to interact with interns from around the nation affiliated with the National Campaign.
Nick Luciano will be a participant in the Washington Nuclear Engineering Student Delegation. Ten students are chosen each year to participate in this group, designed with the goal of allowing students studying nuclear science and engineering to acquire hands-on experience with the political process to learn how they can make a positive impact on the future of nuclear energy, policy, education, and research. Each year, the Delegation convenes in Washington and for a day formulates a set of policy statements that convey their views on nuclear energy, education, and research. Then, for the following three days, they meet with policymakers on Capitol Hill to deliberate over the subjects they have identified. Because many of the policymakers and staff on Capitol Hill do not have a technical background, it is important that the members of the Delegation inform them of how students across the nation feel on relevant issues.
Scott Wofford will be interning with the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars media and public relations division. As an intern, Scott will be attending a variety of events hosted by the Wilson Center, preparing a synthesis of meeting results, and preparing press releases to circulate key issues raised at the meetings. Scott will also be interning part-time with the Salvation Army, Washington DC office where he will get experience in running a large-scale non-profit organization in addition to getting exposure to policy issues faced by these types of organizations. Scott will also participate in networking sessions with Harvard’s Institute of Politics through the National Campaign for Political and Civic Engagement.
