Dr. Wiegand specializes in international conflict management, or conflict processes. Her expertise is in dispute resolution and territorial and maritime disputes, with research interests in war and militarized interstate disputes, bargaining strategies, foreign policy behaviors, domestic politics, and terrorism and political violence. She has spent almost two decades examining the conflict dynamics of territorial and maritime disputes in every region of the world, but particularly those in East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. Dr. Wiegand has written extensively about these disputes, specializing in the East China Sea dispute, the South China Sea dispute, the South Korea-Japan dispute, and disputes in the Persian Gulf. In addition to this research agenda, Dr. Wiegand has written extensively about Islamic terrorist and guerilla groups, particularly Hamas and Hezbollah. She lived and taught international relations in Lebanon and interviewed Hezbollah on a number of occasions. Currently Dr. Wiegand is working on research projects on identity claims, funded by a Minerva grant, with scholars at University of North Texas, University of Iowa, and University of Georgia, a project on event data on non-state violence in the Arab world, and multiple papers in progress.
