The rise of China and persistence of Russia as a major military power present a significant national security challenge for the United States. Washington’s ability to deal successfully with these large rivals will be determined in part by how well it makes use of its extensive international alliances and in particular its close allies in Europe. Please join us for a discussion of these issues with Dr. A. Wess Mitchell, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Venezuela: Beginning of the End, or End of the Beginning?

US Ambassador William Brownfield has an extensive professional background. He was US Ambassador to Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela. In addition to that, he also served as Career Ambassador which is the highest rank in the US Foreign Service. In January 1999, Hugo Chavez assumed office as president of Venezuela on a political platform of radical change. Venezuela had a prosperous middle class, was the world’s third-leading oil exporter, enjoyed 40 years of political and electoral stability, had a violent crime rate below the Latin American average and hosted millions of refugees and immigrants. Brownfield will discuss these matters in greater detail.
